MunkmarschMunkmarsch

Dating back to the 15th century, the village has had its own harbour since 1859. Here the steamers from the mainland would land and the tourists would disembark before carrying on to Westerland by coach. The construction of the Hindenburgdamm in 1927 meant that Munkmarsch lost its importance as gateway to the island. The harbour is now a marina, and the rebuilt ferry house a restaurant and hotel. A welcome stopover point for yachtsmen, the bay is also very popular with surfing beginners, and Munkmarsh also has its own sail and surf school.
The Marschentöpferei produces and sells handmade ceramics that include stoneware jugs, vases and beakers, ceramic objects for the garden, and painted wall tiles – each piece is unique, rather like Munkmarsh itself.
